We Made It!

Hola! We're back!

We did, in fact, make it to the boat last Saturday with bottle of antibiotics in hand, thanks to 24-hour Walgreens. The funny (or rather sad) thing is, after giving him his first dose and making it all the way on board the ship, I ended up spilling the whole bottle in my purse (again - Murphy's Law!). We ended up taking him to the ship's doctor who had to do an examination, but who gave us the antibiotics -- all for a $128. Kaching! Although we were grateful that Bennett could still get his meds, this was the first sign of many kaching moments on this trip.

The rest of our trip went smoothly. We spent the first day at sea, and Bennett enjoyed playing in the toddler pool and toddler slide. We ate pretty much constantly - from the breakfast buffet, to the buffet lunch to the fancy dinners the the free ice cream cones. I feel sick just writing about it. Bennett's daily meal consisted of bacon and fruit for breakfast, an ice cream cone for lunch, an ice cream cone for snack, and then french fries, lumpia and fruit for dinner. Every day. He would eat nothing else and since we were on vacation....well you know, we let it slide. Tomorrow is day one of broccoli and carrot detox.

Our ports of call included Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. I found Puerto Vallarta to be the most interesting but my impression of all three was the same in this way - I said "No, gracias" about a million times because were constantly being solicited. From the moment we got off the boat and were taken by Time Share People Disguised as Information Guides to the haggling over van tours of the city to the bracelet vendors (with bags of pot in the palms of their hands) as they followed me shouting out one of my favorite marketing benefits :"Why not buy, for the heck of it?"

I think one of my favorite moments was when Bennett's Grandma "Obama" bought him a toy rat on a string. This rat looks SO REAL. We asked B what was his name and his immediate response was "Hampy!" So he drags Hampy on this string like a pet on a leash and proceeds to FREAK OUT everyone on the ship, including the ship's crew. J told me a bunch of drunk guys were chasing after it trying to step on it. Our kid, though, would pick Hampy up and give him a kiss, totally unaware of his pet rat's effect on his fellow passengers.

Bennett did get to get a picture with a donkey in his lap (will post as soon as i get home) and he also got to ride a donkey while the rest of us were taking the Tequila Factory tour. He also spent one and a half hours in the Kid Camp on the ship, but never went back since he had a little potty training accident (totally my fault) and was too embarassed to go back. Except for that one time at Kid Camp, he did exceptionally well with using the potty and telling us each time he needed to go. Now all we have to do is teach him how to go by himself.

All in all, it was a nice little vacation...our first real vacation with Bennett. My Dad asked me today if I thought Bennett knew he was in a foreign country at all. i don't really know. Do 2 year olds get that concept yet? Especially when he thinks everyone can count to 5 in Spanish like Dora does anyway?
