Have You Hugged Your Kid Today?

Just came back from the funeral of the son of our friends Mark and Jill. Brandon would have been 20 months old today. The service was beautiful - whoever the rabbi was did the most amazing, amazing eulogy. She painted a perfect picture of who he was and what he loved. When she described Brandon, it was so hard not to think of Bennett. When I hug Bennett now, I don't let go so easily. I smell his hair and I listen to every last round of E-I-E-I_Ohhhhhhhhh that he can muster. I watch him sleep and listen for his little baby snores. For J, the hardest part was to see the programs with Brandon's birthdate and death date side by side. Only 20months old - this is not how things should be. For me - the realization that life truly can change in a split second and that time is precious - has affected me deeply. Sorry to get all Dead Poet's Society on you, but Carpe Diem -- Seize the Day. Hug your kid. Hug your friends. Call your mom and dad if you haven't done so lately. Stop working so much. Stop playing so little. Forgive if you need to. Quit making someday plans. Just do.
