Cause and Effect

Every morning, when Bennett wakes up, he pulls my hand and starts to whine: "Mommy, get up, Mommy, get up, Mommy get up, Mommy get up..." until I actually get up. It always would take me several, long minutes though before I would actually get up.

Eventually, he learned that when he mentions food, my maternal instinct to feed my child revs up and I jump out of bed. It started with "Mommy, waffle." Each time he said that, I would leap out of bed because I thought he was hungry and wanted a waffle. But he would never eat the waffle once I made it, which made me realize he just knew what button to push to get me out of bed. So, I started ignoring him every time he cried waffle. Bennett learned to adapt and changed his morning cry to "Mommy, meatball!" For awhile, I fell for it each time. But sure enough, he wouldn't eat his strange breakfast request of meatball, and his plea for me to get up in the morning for meatballs fell on deaf ears. Finally, last weekend, he decided to try a new tactic - one that was sure to work. He poked at my face, looked into my eyes with a big, toothy grin and said: "Mommy want coffee?"
